Ooh oooh I know this one

It's cat hair

I had a wonderful gray kitty and an infrared laser sensor system and it would always/very frequently go off even when I clearly stepped over the beam. So I did the obvious geek thang and hooked up a night vision camera to record what the beam was seeing when it goes off.

The answer was kitty hair and a building cloud of dust ... I'm a guy ... vacuuming isn't a high priority for my staircase ... BUT the kitty hair showed up like a bright thread in the beam

Even in moderately cleaner environments :whistling:  those things don't do well close to the floor  It's also why I wouldn't put too much stock in shows that use them. The PIR versions are better close to the ground BUT also come with other issues so if you can adjust the sensitivity down as low as you can and see if that helps or you know raise the height of the beam and sensor up a foot or two if your cat is small lion sized :bunny:

@Siguie, it's a short haired cat... but definitely sheds like crazy lol. I'll still post the pics though. I forgot to take them last night. I can post them at like 4 today when I get home.
