Hi,

I had this thought the other day after watching a TV.

A priest at a church. Would you trust the Priest?

If yes, then if the Priest tells you God spoke to him, would you believe the Priest?

If yes, then the Priest tells you that God told him to kill unbelievers, would you believe the Priest?

If no, then please explain why?

If yes, and the Priest does the act and is arrested. In court the Priest has to swear on the Bible and he tells the courtroom that God told him to do it. Would the jurors believe the Priest and find him not Guilty.

I think you are trying to discuss an example of defeasible reasoning and in this case looks like you are trying to imply an argument from authority situation.

In the end this kind of thing is where "trust" becomes a question of belief in particular what is stronger their belief in the faith, the priest or themselves/moral values etc.. The same would be true for the juror situation though I don't think swearing on a bible changes anything.

I'm not too keen about these type of questions, but I'll answer.

A priest at a church. Would you trust the Priest? - I'd need to know that person for a very long time before I'd really trust him.

If yes, then if the Priest tells you God spoke to him, would you believe the Priest? - Possibly, again I'd really need to know him/her before I could give a reasonable answer.

If yes, then the Priest tells you that God told him to kill unbelievers, would you believe the Priest? - No way, I wouldn't believe it on God's good green Earth.

If no, then please explain why? - There is no reason to kill unbelievers. IMO, that type of thinking is sick and twisted, that would be no different than what Hitler did.

If yes, and the Priest does the act and is arrested. In court the Priest has to swear on the Bible and he tells the courtroom that God told him to do it. Would the jurors believe the Priest and find him not Guilty. - There is no way that anyone with even a mote of sanity, would condone that kind of slaughter, just because a person doesn't believe in the same God you do.

I have no good reason to trust a priest any more than anyone else. Less so if they claim god told them things

Can I ask what were you watching?

We have a friend who is a priest, which is why I said, " I'd need to know that person for a very long time before I'd trust him."

a good defence lawyer would probably look for a plea of insanity to remove the need for a jury....

Being a priest doesn't make that person any more trustworthy than anyone else. So would I? No. There are very few people in the world that I actually trust.

I don't even trust myself half the time, I have made some very bad decisions that turned out ok, but were really stupid of me to do, and I survived them (thankfully). So yeah, you can't put total trust in anyone.

Trust has to be earned....not given freely.  For me anyways.

Anyone who tells me to do anything bad to another would be in the Dont Trust column.

If the priest killed someone...how could the jury find him not guilty?  Even if God told him to do it...It's still murder.
Just because you have one....doesn't mean you have to act like one - Louczar

I don't think a priest would be more trustworthy. People often use religion to manipulate or harm people. Not saying that religion is bad of course, but the way that a lot of people use it as a guise certainly makes me slow to trust.

If a preistt was told by "god" to kill I would have to assume that it wasnt god who intructed him, but a negitive entity manipulating the priest.....
