This halo effect is common when you have light wrapping from behind/side exceeding the dynamic range of the camera while retaining the subject within a proper range of exposure. Small sensor cameras suffer more quickly. People need to understand cameras DO NOT see like the human eye. The human eye is capable under good conditions of  24 stops of light. A high end camera is around 12-14 stops. Subtle differences seen with the eyes are dramatically turned into MUCH brighter/darker shades with a camera. Cell phone are fine for quick shots but have to be managed with expertise when dealing with high levels of contrast to make a good image. I never really understood this until I used a modelling light and saw how shadows fall and then took a shot and saw the differences. Lorac is correct, it's from strong backlighting/sidelighting producing a halo effect. I have produced it in the studio before making mistakes. Sorry I don't save those images to illustrate. I see them as bad shots and problem solve to avoid in the future. I apologize for the late response.

Here are some Halo Effect pics I found when I searched on Google Images. They're not quite the same shots, but as examples it's the best I could come up with.

Mac, thank you for finding those images. The first image is an extreme case but a really good example. The highlights are totally blown out illustrating the shortcomings of the limited dynamic range. In fact, the subjects face is virtually in shadow. Our eyes never would have seen this extreme. Good catch!

Generally, peoples auras are multicolored, at least that's what I see and they shimmer; like heat waves rising off of asphalt..
