Thatís an objective question, but I feel absolutely certain it wasnít anything like no or tinnitus.  The next day when my father again helped me look at the car, we could replicate the sound when I had him knock on the roof over the passenger side while I sat in the driverís side.

Your passenger seat may have been occupied by a third party.

Whether that's the case or not...

Seeing as the loud banging on your roof didn't cease when you first stopped the car on the road, the goal may have been to get you to exit the vehicle.

Good possibility too

I keep thinking of this...letís say whatever it was did want me to exit the vehicle, for what purpose?
Itís funny that Iíve not shared this often and not spent a lot of time thinking about it for the past 30 years, but since Iíve shared it here Iím intrigued.  Not frightened or anything, just appreciating the fact that people have ideas as to what might have happened.

Sometimes people vanish into thin air, maybe it was a "people snatcher"

I don't know, would that banging etc make you want to exit the vehicle? I would be locking the doors and staying put!

Lol, maybe it wasn't the smartest people snatcher, the others assigned it to that road because they figured it wouldn't be busy.

All kidding aside, that would have freaked me out. It almost sounds like a real person was on top of the car, and then jumped off before  you got home. Do you think that is possible?

It sounds and felt exactly like that!  But no, thereís no way that couldíve happened.  I was probably doing 40-50mph when it started, and at that point there werenít any trees or anything on either side of the road for something to have dropped onto the car.
I am somewhat surprised that I didnít find similar stories on the net, but then thatís what led me here looking for answers.

Maybe it was a warning - are you a bit of a speedy driver? Did you slow down on the road when the banging was happening?

Unlikely.  I wasnít driving fast, and on those roads ( following ridges) itís impossible to drive very quickly anyway.

I had what sounded and felt like I had driven over a piece of timber once. It was dark and I was on my way home... So dark and stopping wasn't on my agenda. The next day I went and looked where I thought the incident happened and could see nothing but the funny thing was my partner's car did break down in the same area after this happened. Maybe it is a warning to take care on that stretch of road?

We will never really know for sure.  I'd say just assume that it was an act of divine intervention and you were helped out in some way.  I bet you will sleep a lot better thinking this was why! :-)

This was not done to assist or to warn the OP.

In fact, I'd say that if the banging had anything to do with assistance of some kind, there's the possibility assistance was wanted - i.e. there's a chance it was a distressed "open up" banging on the roof.

In my experience, IF someone/something wanted you to exit the vehicle on the road, it would most likely be to further play or 'mess' with you. Meaning, there'd either be 'the reveal' OR (and this is my bet) you wouldn't see anything, get back in, and the knocking would start up again.

A direct assault on your person is very unlikely, but admittedly that depends on whoever/whatever's knocking. Someone or something that can simply shut off your car or 'missing time' you isn't going to bang on your roof to stop your vehicle. Also, anyone or anything who can simply dart out or suddenly appear in front of you without any risk to themselves can just do that to make a driver swerve or aggressively break and potentially crash. Way more effective than banging on your roof.

Again, it's quite possible the reaction this banging elicited from you was exactly the kind of reaction it was meant to elicit.

I think Klainey has the right idea - a warning about the area !

ah....  Kind of like Lassie barking trying to get help for someone...  Honestly, this was the picture that popped in my mind when I read your post.  You made a good point though.

I suggested some different possibilities before but didn't share what my reading was.

My reading:

There are two parties: one outside the vehicle, one inside the vehicle.

The one outside doesn't read as human. The one inside reads as a young female.

The one outside the vehicle, banging on the roof, feels crazed, desperate to collect the other, who they constantly hound. They are controlling, dark.

The one inside the vehicle, in the passenger seat, is indifferent to the protests on the roof (they're used to ignoring the other). They have an air of defiance about them, or a certain 'headstrongness'. They don't turn to the OP or to look out the window, they just face forward. They are calm, daydreaming. I very much feel they would like to ride in cars with boys, to leave, to have time to themselves, to have their own space.

When the OP turns off the road onto his driveway he loses both his passenger and the pursuit.

It's likely neither could cross the property line. They seem connected to that stretch of road, and specifically a property along it somewhere, or, if not a property on the road, one very close by.

Also, I should mention the pursuit was immediate, meaning wherever along the road the banging on the roof started that's where the young female 'hopped in'.
