It was the same show trin was talking about.I saw that as well - none of it was real - cgi and guesswork. But it's really cool to see the ending, where they show how they came to think all of it.It was on Animal Planet and The Discovery Channel....Patrick Stewart narrated it.

ETA: Here is the link for the show.

I fully believe that not everyone is meant to see things; some things you just aren't meant to know.

Dragons exist.

Are they intelligent? Very. Can they appear in human form? Yes. Can they put spells on people? Yes. Do they have scales? Yes. Do they have wings? Some do. Do they breathe fire? Not literally. Do they look like Daenerys' kiddies on HBO's Game Of Thrones? There's certainly a resemblance.

Got anything to back this up?

... if you goto asian and ask what a dragon looks like they would say a long serpent with no wings and in the western part of the world if you ask the ppl there they look different they have wings and walk on land ...

While you find different descriptions of dragons in different parts of the world, the descriptions tend to all agree on the basics:

big + intelligent + reptile

Ok. But these aren't facts, are they?

"big + intelligent + reptile" is accurate.

Of course, until such time as you are in the position to confirm this as factual or not, this core profile simply serves as 'a potentially accurate base description of something which may or may not exist'.

What's wrong with believing dragons could exist, or could of existed?  People are discovering new animals, plants, insects, fossils, ect., all the time. Some cryptids are being discovered as being true.

Whether or not you think it possible dragons exist, people like those who've posted in this thread wish to explore that possibility. They ask themselves if the familiar, fantastical beasts of Tolkien's Middle-earth and Martin's Westeros, which themselves derive from much much older tales, could be based on an original 'real deal' archetype: something currently swimming, walking, and/or flying around... or which once did.

People want to know how much truth there is to stories of dragons and will need to start that search somewhere. A good place to start is the core dragon mythos; the base characteristics (big + intelligent + reptile), general behavior/temperament [insert general behavior/temperament], and the main plot points [insert main plot points] consistent across most tales.

The farther something goes back the better.

(and the better someone's grasp of the core mythos, the better position they'll be in to try and make some sense of it)

If dragons had (past tense) existed in the past.....long time past, and if they were big.  Then there would be fossils similar to dinosaurs that should have been found by now.  It is very uncommon for scientists to find new types of fossils of large reptile creatures these days.

If there are still some alive....and again, if they are big.  There surely would have been some sort of encounters with them.  There are more pictures / video of bigfoot (real of fake) than any type of dragon.

Do my statements completely rule out the existence of dragons past or present?  Not at all.  If you want to move forward with the discussion of the existence of dragons.  I would refrain from fantasy fictional books.  And yes, there are a lot of stories from VERY LONG ago that speak of beasts.  Even the Bible speaks of leviathans.

If you go back a long time...people used to think that there was a god of lightning and thunder named Thor too.

What if the stories all manifested from sightings of alligators?  And as people shared the story...they embellished a little bit each time and at some point the alligator could now fly?

I cannot say that dragons had never existed or dont today.  To me, it's just not enough evidence to have ever come out for me to think there were then or now.

If I remember right, scientists think there are creatures that people called dragons but weren't. You can google it and see what you come up with. If dragons themselves as myth describes them actually existed, there would be some physical evidence.

Uh the fossil record is extremely incomplete, and unless the critters were present in large numbers and or close to sedimentary zones they likely won't be found anytime soon in fossil form

In any event I think you can argue for "dragons" based on cladistics which is basically educated guessing  Though I guess I it would depend on how you define dragons. I kinda think any big lizard would count

Komodo dragons are pretty dang smart  and they are already called dragons so I say just go with it :bunny:

People who encounter a real dragon won't necessarily know they've encountered a dragon. Meaning they simply might not make the correlation between what they're looking at (or speaking to) and it's fictional counterpart on a movie screen or in a children's book. Yes, there are similarities, but there are also major differences.

There are constant encounters.

That said,

You make a common error here. You assume 'big' = 'easy to spot'.
