It's the photo reflective effect commonly known as red eye when a flash is shot on a similar plane to the eye and lens. Many softwware programs have a red eye reduction in the editing mode. Shooting images of birds it's commonly known as "steel eye". Shooting OCF (off camera flash) or bouncing the flash off a wall or ceiling would solve this issue.
There are still traces of red eye on the gals on the far left and right.
In my opinion the black mass is face paint.
