A Story By Me

His name was David Wallace, but everybody knew him as "Mr. Sanders".
He worked as a bartender and bouncer at Rosa's Lounge.
He loved his work because he liked the people and he loved the Blues.
He didn't have to work. He was, after all, comfortably well off financially because
he lived off of his investments.
He lived in Old Town which suited him. He had a nice 2 bedroom apartment with
a fireplace and an outside deck. On Summer nights he would sit out on the deck
with his girlfriend Connie and look out at Lake Michigan.
On a typical day, he'd wake up, help Connie fix breakfast, shower, get dressed and
then head off to the Bank to talk with his broker. Today though, was anything but typical.
Instead of the usual, he skipped breakfast, kissed Connie and walked down the street to grab
a bagel, a cup of hot, black coffee and a copy of the Tribune at the local Starbuck's.
Everyone seemed absolutely oblivious to the fact the a LARGE brown Bear had just walked in, like
it was the most normal thing in the world.
While reading the front page, (he wasn't one of those who read from an iPad), he was greeted
by a friendly voice. He looked up and saw a friend of his coming in the door.
"Hey Sanders! Good to see ya. How' ya doin'?"
"Oh, hi Carmine. I'm good. When did you get back in town?"
"Just last night. So glad to get out of LA. How's Connie?"
"She's good, thanks. We're thinking about taking a vacation."
"No foolin'. Got things squared away with Rose?"
"Mmmmmm....not just yet. It's been busy lately."
It was then that Mr. Sanders did a double take. Carmine wasn't in his Church clothes.
"What's with the civvies? Shouldn't you be getting ready for Mass?"
"You haven't heard", Carmine asked? "I've quit the Priesthood."
Sanders stared in open shock, putting his paper down.
"You're joking! You? I always figures you for the next Bishop", Sanders said, half smiling.

It's driving me crazy considering the bear is the main character and lives as a human, how is that?
Posted 10 January 2017 - 12:01 AM
And why aren't people noticing the fact that he's a bear!
I can't wait for the next episode.

Busted with a hooker in Hollywood. Who'd a thunk it, he thought to himself shaking his head.
He made the bus, as the old song goes, "in seconds flat", retrieved his newspaper again and started
reading the "Agony Column" as he liked to call it.
"Carrie Fisher AND Debbie Reynolds? Too much", he thought.
His reading was rudely interrupted as a young woman and her single digit aged son got on the bus.
The boy twaddled along with his mother with a smile on his face and sat down in the aisle across from him.
The boy looked around curiously until he saw Mr. Sanders with his paper. The boy stared in open wonder, pointed
at Mr. Sanders, then turned to his mother and said, "Mommy, there's a bear on this bus!"
The young mother looked at Mr. Sanders and blushed scarlet.
"I'm very sorry, sir. He has quite the wild imagination."
"Oh, think nothing of it", Sanders said with a smile and a nod which to the boy looked like the bear was showing his teeth
and nodding. He stared open mouthed.
"I was his age once, full of wonder and joy. Just a cub, you might say."
That got the nameless woman to laugh and Sanders laughed with her.
The bell rang as someone signaled for a stop.
"Oh, this is our stop. Off to see his father."
Sanders could tell that it was a "custody" thing, but smiled as he watched them go.
As the bus pulled away, he heard the boy say earnestly, "But Mom, that was a BEAR!"
Every once in a while someone saw him for what he really was and FREAKED!
Those days were few and far between now, though.
Before he knew it, his stop came up and off he went to the bank. He saw Joe, his Broker, first, went over the income
and then took the elevator up to the Tenth floor to his office.
His secretary, Carole, looked up with a smile as he came in.
"Good morning, Mr. Sanders."
"Morning, Carole. Any calls?"
"One from your cousin Geoff in California."
"I wonder what he wants this time."
Carole giggled good-naturedly just as the phone rang.
"Sanders and Wallace Associates."
He smiled and walked into the inner office, closing the door.

What did you think of it?
Posted 10 January 2017 - 08:11 AM
Honestly, I have no frippin' idea. This is stream of consciousness stuff.
I had to use the name "Carole" because I couldn't remember the name of Dad's secretary.
It's in my head. It just won't come out of my mouth.

"Has that tooth been giving you any trouble", Dr. Williams asked while getting a close look with his mouth mirror?
"Uh-guh", said Sanders.
"Darndest thing I ever saw. All your other teeth look fine, but this one is....odd. I'd like to get an X-ray of that tooth.
That okay with you?"
"Hi-ng", said Sanders.
It didn't take long to set up the X-ray machine and do the deed. The sooner it was over, the better.
It was over and done before he knew it. He paid the bill and walked out into the wind blowing in his face.
It was 4:30 PM and he had to get back home to get ready for "the guys" as Connie put it.
He smiled as he opened the door and said, "I'm home."
"In here, hon", came Connie's voice from the kitchen.
He went into the bedroom to take off his tie and jacket and hung them neatly in the closet.
"Is it okay of Nikki comes over?"
He was about to voice his usual complaint about Nikki, but his sense of smell suddenly told him
that Connie had a guest. Even before he walked into the kitchen he knew who it would be.
He sighed unhappily and rounded the corner into the kitchen. He put on a smile that felt painted.
"Oh! Hi big guy", she said, happily, her voice slightly slurred. Yep, she'd been drinking again.
He gave Connie a rueful sidelong glance. She knew that look well. She called it his "Walter Matthau" look.
He looked back at Nikki and did his BEST to be civil.
"How's the job hunting going?"
"Oh! I start work today."
"Hey, that's good news. Glad to hear it. where ya workin'?
"Great", he said with a nod as his stomach fell to his socks. "Listen, I gotta head out. Early start tonight."
"How come", Nikki asked?
"New band in tonight. One of their roadies wound up in the ER this morning with an OD, so I'm working bar
tonight and I'm the Sound Man."
Sanders looked at the clock on the wall. He had to get ready, so he he went into the bedroom to change.
As he slipped into his outfit, Connie came in, walked up to him and smiled.
"Hey...'big guy', thanks for being nice to her this time."
He shrugged but then said, "You KNOW she isn't supposed to be here when she's drunk."
"Oh, she's just a little tipsy. Stop being such a bear".
That made him chuckle.
He finished dressing, grabbed his derby and prepared to leave. Nikki and Connie were gossiping
about something, so he just smiled and waved and headed out the door.

LOL! Wait and see.

Sanders greeted the regulars with a smile and listened to their stories, being sympathetic
with the ones with problems and laughing at the ones telling jokes.
Sanders was also diggin' the music. He even noticed "Blue Lou" sittin' in with the band.
As he was watching a particularly attractive red head on the dance floor, he suddenly found
someone standing in his way.
"What'll it be, pal?"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOIN'? IF THAT'S A COSTUME, MACK, HALLOWEEN IS EIGHT MONTHS AWAY."
"I'm sorry. I beg your pardon", Sanders asked politely though he was getting nervous?
"YOU LOOK LIKE A BEAR!"
"Sir, you have obviously had a little too much to...."
"ARE YOU SAYIN' I'M DRUNK!? MEET ME OUTSIDE IN THE ALLEY AND I'LL...."
"Fine. I'll meet you out there in five minutes. If I'm late, go ahead and start without me."
The drunk stranger looked like he was going to yell out a reply, but then he blinked a few times,
looked confused and walked away, but not before Sanders pushed a hidden button under the counter
and took a photo of the man.
Sanders heaved a sigh of relief as the man disappeared out the back door.
When Break Time came, he uploaded the photo into the computer and did an online search.
INCARCERATED: Joliet Correctional Center
SENTENCE: Five years
Currently on Parole.
Sanders knew he might have to keep his eyes open when he left for home later that evening.
Quitting time finally came and so Sanders clocked out and after telling Rosa and the guys goodnight, he headed for the bus stop.
That's where Robertson was waiting.
He moved quickly from the shadows. One thing that saved Sanders was his heightened senses and faster than human reflexes.
He saw the knife and easily sidestepped it. Robertson gritted his teeth and came in for another attack.
It was just a flesh wound, but it was enough to make Sanders mad. Robertson laughed as he sensed he had scored,
but his triumph soon turned to terror as Sanders knocked the knife into the street...along with most of Robertson's right hand.
Robertson went silent in shock. Sanders lifted him off his feet and ROARED into his face.
Robertson voided himself and fainted.
Sanders lowered the unconscious Robertson to the street, dragged him over into the shadows and left him there.
The bus came minutes later and Sanders got home without further incident.
Luckily for Robertson, the Police found him about 5 minutes after Sanders was gone. They took him to Hospital
where he was stitched up and bandaged. Not long afterward, Robertson was found guilty of violating his parole
and sent back to Joliet.
Sanders looked at the clock as he walked into the apartment.
It was 2:30 AM.
He went into the bathroom, cleaned the cut and put some gauze on it.
He looked in on Connie and saw her sleeping.
What was left of his anger at Robertson melted away as he looked at her and was overcome with love.
Not wishing to wake her, he grabbed an extra blanket and curled up on the couch.
He was asleep in no time, but his dreams were filled with mountains and forests.
