Helena, I guess I share that macabre fascination.  I've read books on Gacy and Bundy.  I truly believe that horrendous acts such as these scar their atmophere until the environment has been cleansed in some way.  I guess the building of a new house with new beginnings served that land well and it was able to recover.  Personally, I can NOT fathom even living on a lot where something like that took place.

I never read Troy's article on Gacy, thanks Helena..

I saw a movie depicting him on cable, it was very chilling and gross, you may know the one I am talking about , I don't remember the actor's name, but it seemed very well done.

When you think about it, he was into molestation, drugs, alcohol, violence, sodomy, murder, etc...I am sure the inhuman entities had a field day with this guy!  All the things that would attract nasty entities plus some....now even the ground seems to be affected by it.

I think your fascination is starting to rub off on me now!    I tend to look at GS when i'm waiting to go to class and I read the article on the Black Dahlia then went to the link of the homepage for that and oh geez...I started reading all the other stuff as well.

Man, now i have to cope with not only a paranormal interest but also a serial killer interest haha.

No, actually it seems fairly recent, I can't remember the actor's name, your going to laugh, its the actor who was on Second City , the heavy guy who was one of Bob & Doug Mckenzie.....he was also in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, the guy who stole his bike.......(wow, just the right guy to play Gacy! LOL!)
Do you know who I mean?  He was very good in the role by the way.

Gacy reminds me of Richard Remirez. A lot of paranormal background there as well. I have found through my readings that a lot of seriel killers have that in their past.

there were other movies besides the one starring Brian Dennehey?that was the only one i ever saw.and i thought he was great playing Gacy.thanks for that link Helena.very interesting read.

That was a great (and really chilling) article.  Thanks for posting it.  Personally, when I read that article I kept thinking "how can this be real?"  I just  cannot fathom a person doing those horrible acts.  To me, it seems that serial killers don't have a soul (shudders)  - and obviously not a wisp of a conscience either.  I find the serial killer stories interesting, but they do make me have trouble sleeping at night.  Makes me wonder how any of us can be frightened of the dead, when the living seem to be the real danger.

Indeed, I think there is little to fear from the dead, compared to the living. It is chilling to contemplate how a human being could do something so monstrous. I think that is part of the fascination many people have with serial killers - we struggle to understand how someone who is at least ostensibly like us, a human being, could do something we see as completely inhuman. And we wonder if such a potential could lie within ourselves as well.

There is a great deal of research on this subject within the field of criminal psychology, some of it contradictory. We know that some serial killers share similar genetic traits, though there is no "serial killer gene" that we can single out. We know that many serial killers are physically and/or sexually abused as children, though this is not always the case. We know that serial killers often show signs of sadistic tendencies or paraphilias in early adolescence, though again, not always. Socioeconomic status is not necessarily a factor, though it can be if it contributes to an abusive childhood environment. In other words, there are a buch of things that might cause someone to become a serial killer, but no one thing or specific combination of things that we can say for sure does make for a serial killer.

There is a theory among some psychologists that there are in reality only a few actual psychological diseases, and that the myriad different disorders we see and diagnose are really just different expressions of the same disease. That, in essence, people are born with the potential to have a certain broad category of disorders, and the circumstances of their lives determine whether or not they ever get a disorder, and what form that disorder takes. This theory is not universally accepted yet, though there is some evidence for it.

If this theory is correct, then some people are basically born with the potential to be sociopaths. If the right circumstances are met during their lives (such as abuse, etc.) they might develop such a pathology, and could even become serial killers. Others will become less serious criminals, and still others will never show any signs of pathology, leading normal lives.

This is a somewhat disturbing thought, because it basically means that, while we can recognize certain warning signs in a clinical setting, and can piece together similarities after the fact, it is difficult to casually predict if someone might actually become a serial killer. That's what makes them so scary - at least on the surface, they often seem like normal people.

As you surmise, the real causal factor in the case of serial killers could be the soul - something for which Psychology, despite the etymology of its name, has no test.

This seriously gave me goosebumps when I read this!! There's a lot of background information to the story, but it mentions the paranormal elements near the end. I know you all with probably think I'm morbid. I have a fascination with serial murders.

Wow, Helena great article. I thought I read everything on that guy. I had no idea he had TWO wives. I share your fascination with serial killers. It just boggles the mind. I also had no idea that dude was locked up way back in 1968. See that? Served only 18 months!

I've found interesting that alot of them guys also had a head injury. Usually as children. Yet another thing added to all things sociopaths I suppose.

Ted Bundy though he was a mastermind, and that he worked right next to Anne Rule still blows my mind. They were actually friends. Makes one wonder how many people we've encountered in our lives have that horrendous potential to hurt other human beings. Makes me ill.

Bless those folks that are living on that lot where that evil clown of a man hurt those kids. All those poor boys. I never stop reminding my nephews to be extra careful. We tend to tell girls and teach them they can be manipulated, but boys are in just as much danger of such things.

I passed that place before it was knocked down...all the windows were bricked up..I didnt even realise that was the place until I saw the street name.

According to Wikipedia Fred West, the area is now a walkway.  They even ground the bricks from the home into dust and buried it beneath a landfill site, to discourage souviner hunters.  I wonder if the Gacy home site and West home sites were blessed.
