I have a friend who has done it for a decade and I am trying it this year.  If you have never heard of this before, look up some videos on youtube.

The warmth of the decaying hay makes growing plants so much easier earlier in the spring than waiting for the soil to warm up.

Update...

My wife picked up some vegetable plants and some herb plants for the garden.  It was only about half of what we needed to fill all the bails.  Within a couple of days, a deer jumped our backyard fence and ate on the plants.  I have to put a make-shift hog-wire fence around the garden.  I finished planting all the plants early this week.

We are growing
Zucchini
Squash
tomatoes
jalapenos
watermelon
and a number of fresh herbs

What I have learned so far:  I have to water the garden every day.  The plants have gotten a little wilted when I missed on day.  I will deduce this is because all the sides of the bail are exposed and evaporation.  I have already found a couple of big caterpillars on the plants.  I thought I would have had less bugs being elevated.  I prefer not to use insecticides.

Once everything gets a little bigger.  I'd like to get some beneficial insects for the garden.  like this https://www.amazon.c...68-2ac74b3d0924

Try dusting the plants with Diametecious Earth (garden grade not a pool grade) and an excellent natural insecticidal spray is:

1 teaspoon Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Pure-Castile Liquid Soap
1 quart of hot water

After mixing this thoroughly, pour the soapy water into a clean spray bottle. Let cool to room temperature before use and thoroughly soak the plants.
