What follows is an account that happened to me when I was about 15 or 16, this actually happened to me in Chicago, IL on Western Ave. and 24th St in broad daylight.

Uncle John
My mother was a waitress for many years at a hole in the wall dive in Chicago, called Bob’s Egg Palace. This place was located on Cermack Road just off of Levitt. One of her coworkers was a man named John. John would babysit me and my brothers when mom was working. John would take us to the zoo, and circuses when in town. John was a good man who loved us as if we were his own.
One day, when I was about 15 or 16 years old, I was waiting for a bus on 24th and Western Ave, when I saw John walking across the street. Western Ave. is a busy thoroughfare in Chicago that runs from North to South through the city. As stated, I noticed John walking down Western and I shouted over the traffic: “Hey Uncle John, how’s it going?” He looked at me, smiled, and saluted me with two fingers. He then turned the corner. I had not seen him for a number of years, but he was wearing the same light brown coat, and cap that I remember him wearing all the time. Thinking no more of it I got on the bus and went home. Once there, I was excited to tell my mom that I saw Uncle John.
“Mom, mom. Guess who I saw on Western.” I said excitedly.
“Who, Mike?”
“Uncle John, form the Egg Palace.”
“When?”
“About a half an hour ago.” I said standing at the kitchen island in our house.
“Ummm, no you didn’t.” She said turning around to look at me.
“Sure I did, he was walking toward…” I started, but my mom cut me off;
“John died 10 years ago in his sleep.”

I assure you, dear reader, that he was as solid as I am now. Maybe he was just checking up on me? I don’t know, but I like to think that he was.

It sounds to me, that's just what he was doing, that he was just letting you know, he was still looking out for you.

Hm... Generally doppelgangers are associated with living persons, not the deceased. I'll check on it.

I looked it up on an online dictionary and this is what they define it as:

Quote

a ghostly double or counterpart of a living person.

I also looked it up here:

Quote

In fiction and folklore, a doppelgänger is a look-alike or double of a living person, sometimes portrayed as a paranormal phenomenon, and is usually seen as a harbinger of bad luck. In other traditions and stories, they recognize one's 'double-goer' as an evil twin.
The word 'doppelgänger' is often used in a more general sense to describe any person who physically or behaviorally resembles another person.
