When the White Settlers came to the Verde Valley, the first indiginous people that they encountered here
were the Yaqi People. They learned how to farm the land from them and afterward, told the Yaqi people that
they wanted to move up onto the mountain. The Yaqi looked at each other and then at the Settlers and said,
"No one goes up on the Mountain. Evil spirits dwell there."
Needless to say, the Settlers didn't listen. They built a tent city and as soon as they could get the materials
Houses went up, then stores and Hotels.
A man from the East came out to Jerome. His name was William Clark. He bought a Mining operation in the area
for $300,000.00. It was Clark who discovered that the mountain sat on top of a veritable Mother Lode of Copper!
Clark promised to pay handsomely. People came from miles around to share in the wealth and work in the mining
tunnels and shafts. Jerome became a boomtown and was established in 1899, but as it is with all earthly places,
Evil came in and staked its claim.
Casinos and Bordellos came in. The Law came in and attempted to staunch the flow of violence and prostitution.
One of those men was a Lawman from Nevada by name of Johnny Hudgens. His boyish good looks told nothing of his
nerves of steel, his iron will and his marksmanship with a gun.
One day, Johnny was warned to get out of town because four locals were gunning for him. The young Deputy went
out to check it out. He stood out in fromnt of the hardware store and sure enough, 4 armed meen walked out, locked
Johnny ordered the men to stand down. Needless to say, they didn't go for that, but instead went for the guns.
Before they even knew what was happening, Johnny drew both his pistols and fired multiple times. Three of the
four men fell dead. The other one took off running, firing at Johnny as he did so. Johnny stood calmly as
he took aim and fired. His final bullet smashed into the running mans head, killing him instantly.
While the gunplay slowed, the gambling and Prostitution did not.
One particular "lady" had the job of standing out on the balcony and looking pretty. The son of a well to do family
met and fell in love with her and even went as far as to announce to his family that he would ask her to be his wife.
He took her out that night, wined and dined her and proposed.
She turned him down flat and left him to pay the bill.
Two days later, a friend of the lady found her in a field, staring blankly up at the sky, dead.
She'd been strangled.
Not long after, the jilted lover disappeared from town.
The ghost of this woman has been seen walking from the Bordello to the place where she was found dead.
