In studying metaphysics for over 30 years and teaching classes at the local university on the subject of guides, I have to step in here and say a word about animal spirits as guides.
It is my understanding and belief that only what we would term "human" souls are our true master guide/teachers.
We can and do have animal totems and spirits that do connect with us as well, mine in the owl, but they are not the same as our main guides.
Some people connect themselves to animals and even think that in past lives they have been animals. That is just not possible. You cannot take a human soul and turn it into an animal or vise versa. Some Shamans may shape-shift, but a human soul is a human soul.
Our guides are located and exist on a etheric field higher than ours. They can exist in both worlds at the same time or work from the Other Side with us. There is a counsel of elders that assigns guides to us, and this team of guides will work with us.
Animal totems or guides exist on a different plane of existance, and they are not as high a vibration as "human" guides.
The highest level is God; then the angels; and then our guides. The animal totems are lower forms of energy that work with us.
It is not necessary to know who your guide is; what their name is or to meet them in order for them to work with you. They have been with you since your soul existed on the Other Side before you were born. They worked with you mapping out your blue print for this lifetime before you were born, and continue to work with you now that you have incarnated into this lifetime.
Once ppl get into the metaphysics, some assume that they will connect with their guides and form a personal bond and relationship with them. That is not always true. It depends on the level of the soul; old or new, and how well one is spiritually connected to the Other Side.
Regardless of your spiritual connection to your guide, even if you don't have a clue that you even have a guide, they are still working with you. It is like air. You don't have to see it or study it. It exists, one breaths it, and it sustains the body. It is designed to work that way.
So, if one does not know their guide or their guide's name it is not a tragedy or that big of a deal. Your guide still works with you, consults with the elders and helps guide you along the way.
Unfortunately for us, we are also given free will and guides may not interfere with the decisions we make. They can nudge us in the right direction, but as the old saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. They can only point things out to us, send us thoughts and try to help us, but in the end it is our free will decisions that determine our life path.
